How Six Sigma Training Can Benefit Employees

Increasing one’s knowledge after school is one of the disciplines that most employees try to cultivate to develop their skills and knowledge in general. In most cases, that proves the right thing to do, especially in the changing business and employment environment. Six Sigma training is one of the opportunities that employees can leverage on and here is how it can benefit their lives.

Adds to their credentials

Any employee with Six Sigma qualification proves as an invaluable resource to the company, which is why it is important for such employees to attach these qualifications with their other credentials. Such qualification can either be green or black belt level certification, and any of them can land you a job because most probably, employers will give such individuals priority in the recruitment process.

Protection from layoffs

As organizations move to restructure their operations to accommodate new changes in the environment they operate in, most probably, the solution will be to lay off some workers. That is an unpleasant experience for those who lose their jobs, and there is sometimes no guarantee of securing employment elsewhere. Six Sigma qualifications can help you retain your job during such times, which means that you are an asset that the company values.

Applicable in diverse environments

The fact that you can apply Six Sigma in new environments means that if a company closes down, you will still be marketable. As a result, you will be able to transfer the same knowledge in the new job through practical applications, which also strengthens your position in the next job you secure. Six Sigma Training in Education

In a more traditional setting, this situation would be screaming for intervention from even basic six sigma training. We can all recognize the classic signs of a top-heavy, inefficient system that ignores the needs and wisdom of workers on the front line.

Our public schools are the foundation for American community. They teach students the skills necessary to grow and thrive and become a generation of engaged, responsible citizens. These same schools we rely on are also tragically underfunded, top-heavy, over regulated, often under-performing, and all too frequently the recipient of harsh criticism from the public and political perspective.

If public schools were a private business, they would be currently bankrupt because of out dated policies from high level executives, despite the heroic efforts from those workers on the front-line (teachers).

Sound familiar?

In a more traditional setting, this situation would be screaming for intervention from even basic six sigma training. We can all recognize the classic signs of a top-heavy, inefficient system that ignores the needs and wisdom of workers on the front line.

If students, parents, and communities are the customer, how can we meet their diverse and complex demands with Six Sigma?

While many of the necessary changes may be several decades off at the national level, local schools, principals and communities are finding success by implementing new policies within their building.

These successes look like:

Staff meetings structured around teacher input, not administrative agenda.

Data driven reflection. Many teachers today are getting extensive training in how to read the successes and struggles they have with teaching different concepts based on simple, on-going assessments of student learning. These are NOT massive end of year tests, however. The most effective form of data driven growth is small, daily assessments of writing samples, math problems of the day or even ‘exit tickets’ to quickly demonstrate whether a student got it.

Moving away from the baking soda volcano. Although a perennial favorite, the classic school project, this is a strong example of an activity which is often unrelated to a clear outcome. Teachers are being asked today, to consider how each lesson, activity, and even worksheet directly builds towards student understanding of a clearly defined outcome (i.e. a skill for students to master).

Hearing from the customer. Yes, that means listening to student ideas. Many schools give out regular student surveys about teachers and classes to gather feedback directly from the ‘customer’ about how effective the lessons are. Good teachers develop personal relationships with their students to understand their diverse needs. Parents and communities in successful school districts are also regular voices at school board meetings and ‘coffee with the superintendent.’

Although these are only a few examples, there is a clear correlation between the needs of our education system and the skills provided by Six Sigma training.

Pyzdek Institute Black Belt’s Book Clarifies Confusing Concepts in Statistics

In preparation for the Black Belt certification exam, he started writing his own explanations, augmented by diagrams and pictures. These helped him ace the exam (along with our training, of course!)

andy-jawlik-book-front-cover-jpgI’ve taught the Six Sigma process quality methods to many students over the years. Invariably, it’s the statistics that confuses people the most. There has been a real need for a book that clears up this confusion. Now, a graduate of the Pyzdek Institute Black Belt program has done something about that.

Andrew A. Jawlik has written a book Statistics from A to Z: Confusing Concepts Clarified, published by Wiley.

Despite having an MS in Math, Andy – like many other intelligent, technical people – found the statistics in most college statistics courses to be difficult and confusing. And existing statistics books weren’t much help. In preparation for the Black Belt certification exam, he started writing his own explanations, augmented by diagrams and pictures. These helped him ace the exam (along with our training, of course!)

He showed some of this work to me and asked if I thought he should pursue writing a book. I encouraged him to do so. Two and a half years later, he completed a 418-page book.

The book is alphabetically arranged, like a mini-encyclopedia, comprised of 74 succinct articles on more than 60 statistical concepts. Each article starts with a one-page list of about 5 “Keys to Understanding”, so that you can see everything you need to know on a single page. Subsequent pages in the article provide expanded explanations of these Keys. There is liberal use of graphics like concept flow diagrams, compare-and-contrast tables, and even cartoons to provide visual reinforcement of the concepts and how they interrelate.

You can see excepts from the book on the website at the link below. There is also a blog on the website in which Andy publishes a Statistics Tip of the Week. And he has just begun uploading videos to his YouTube channel about individual statistical concepts in the book.

Six Sigma for Education from Pyzdek Institute LLC

Pyzdek Institute LLC

Can Six Sigma work for public education?

Because lack of funding for education is an ongoing issue, the time is right to apply Six Sigma principles in a school setting.

Lean Six Sigma Training by Thomas Pyzdek integrates the Lean and Six Sigma bodies of knowledge into comprehensive systems that provide value for customers. For school administrators, Lean Six Sigma means reducing waste in support systems so that you can redirect crucial dollars into the classroom.

While the top priority of any school is educating students, the school is also a business that must make efficient use of available funds. How can the school staff and support services be organized to reduce waste and increase productivity?

Here are some areas where educators can apply Lean Six Sigma:

Flow of information.

Are record keeping processes streamlined so that student data is secure, accessible to those who need it, easily updated, and free from errors? Can paperwork processes be simplified so that more time is available for direct service to students?

Office costs.

Does the administrative office make the best use of technology to reduce printing and paper costs?

Inter-department cooperation.

Are tasks duplicated because departments are not communicating? How can a review of processes using Six Sigma streamline workflow and interaction between departments?

Staff deployment.

Do you have the right number of support staff assigned to high need areas? How can staffing be revamped to deliver service to instructional staff more efficiently?

Contact the Pyzdek Institute to learn how Lean Six Sigma training can help you maximize your school budget.

The Six Sigma Training Framework

Six Sigma TrainingThe Six Sigma framework is the process that Six Sigma trainees use to evaluate their businesses and create more powerful projects that lead to increased capital and a more effective workflow. DMAIC is the acronym for the Six Sigma framework and stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. By following the DMAIC process, businesses can minimize error rates, build customer relationships and customer loyalty, and increase their profit margin.

The first step in the Six Sigma framework is “D” for Define. For each project, individuals must first define the goals of the activity that they wish to improve upon. In this step, individuals will identify who the customer is, what the key metrics are, and what will be considered “successful” for the project. The second step is “M” for Measure. This is where individuals set up avenues to collect the necessary data, decide how progress will be measured, and determine what the drivers are for the project.

The third step is the step where individuals need to use their new Six Sigma skill sets to Analyze the data that they have collected and compare it to the deliverables that were chosen in the first step of the process. In the “A” for Analyze step, individuals will locate the root causes of problems and the root causes of success for the project based on an analysis of the data. In the fourth step, “I” for Improve, individuals will figure out how they can improve their project and create a new project plan that specifically outlines what the changes are as well as what needs to be done in order to implement the new changes. The final step “C” for Control, asks individuals to determine how they will ensure that these improvements are maintained leading to lasting project success.

How Six Sigma Certification Can Help a New College Graduate

How Six Sigma certification can help a new college graduate

If you’re a new graduate, you know that you’re facing a tough job market. Even those with years of experience can struggle to find a good job. This is when it’s time to think about how Six Sigma certification can help a new college graduate.

What Is Six Sigma Certification?

At its core, Six Sigma training helps workers understand how to make companies run more smoothly. Those who take training and receive certification earn “belts” similar to what you’d find in karate. The training takes the most important elements of statistics, mathematics, project management, business, and psychology classes and puts them together into a succinct program.

How Certification Helps You Get a Job

Employers want to see that you have skills, knowledge, and experience that will benefit the business. While new graduates in non-engineering fields have definitely learned problem solving and other “soft” skills, these don’t always translate well to a resume. With Six Sigma certification, an employer can immediately see that you have had intense training. This is especially important if you’re applying to work for companies that already use the Six Sigma program. You’ll be able to jump right in.

Gaining Experience

Part of the Six Sigma training process is hands on work on a particular project. Those who are attending the training while employed often develop something within their company, but new graduates can use their Six Sigma project to help a non-profit, church, or social club. Even though you won’t get paid to do this work, it will show potential employers that you have the experience they’re looking for.

The Pyzdek Institute offers a variety of courses that you can use to earn your Six Sigma certification, no matter which type of belt you want to earn. Contact us to learn more about our programs and what they can do to help you.

Seven Ways Six Sigma Certification Can Help You Change Careers

How Six Sigma Certification can help you change careers

Off the top of our heads, we can think of seven ways in which you can use Six Sigma Certification to improve professionally. Don’t believe us? Well, sit back and let us explain how Six Sigma Certification can help you change careers to your advantage.

Becoming a valued employee is similar to becoming a valuable candidate. Skills increase value for employees and candidates alike, and Six Sigma improves three types of skills through the best teacher — experience.

  • Hard and soft skills: Six Sigma is a set of hard and soft skills that you can use in a wide variety of situations. These skills equip you to solve complex problems in rapid fashion with consistency and efficiency. What more could a boss ask of his star employee?
  • Self-confidence: You can do anything you set your mind to. Now, as you accomplish Six Sigma certification and gain practical experience in solving quality issues, you will see that truth realized. Self-confidence opens doors in any and every industry.
  • Leadership: Simply put, your leadership skills will greatly improve while leading a team through highly visible, organization-spanning projects.

Changing careers can be a daunting prospect, but exposing yourself to the right people, situations, audience and circumstances can open the necessary doors. Here are four types of exposure you will gain through Six Sigma certification.

  • Organization-wide exposure: Six Sigma projects address problems and opportunities all over the organization, and this exposes you to new people and new areas of the company. This is your chance to showcase your talents and your passion to a broad audience throughout the organization.
  • Executive-level exposure: Because Six Sigma’s goal is improved quality and efficiency, leaders from all over the organization will be interested in your project — and in you. Again, network — this time with C-suite execs — and gain the skills to back up your performance.
  • Multi-industry exposure: You will often work directly with customers and suppliers while carrying out a Six Sigma project. Take this opportunity to get to know professionals who may be able to help you find a career outside of your current company.
  • Expert exposure: You can use your Six Sigma experience to get speaking and writing opportunities with professional societies, magazines and blogs. You may be surprised to find that many professionals do not understand the impact of a quality Six Sigma project. As a certified Six Sigma professional, you become an expert in a highly prized quality-improvement program.

The skills and exposure you receive from Six Sigma certification moves you closer to your goals — whether those goals are to climb the ladder at your current organization or to pursue the career you really want.

To talk more about improving your career through Six Sigma Certification, please Contact Us. Thanks.

How can You Get a Better Job with Your Non-STEM Degree? Training, Plus Six Sigma Certification!

Six-Sigma-certification

Would you like to know how to get a better job with your non-STEM degree plus Six Sigma Certification?

The Pyzdek Institute LLC, as we proudly state on our website, literally wrote the book on Six Sigma Training. The Pyzdek Institute was established to promote Thomas Pyzdek’s unique approach to Process Excellence and Lean Six Sigma. This can involve becoming a certified “Black Belt,” a quality that will allow those without STEM degrees to get an equally excellent and high-paying job. Moreover, those who have achieved the “Black Belt” certification will earn around $21,685 more than their non-certified counterparts.

How Will Six Sigma Certification Help Me?

– If you have a degree that focuses on the liberal arts, Six Sigma projects are reliant on the “soft” people skills that most of those degree-holders possess. These people tend to be stronger in this area than technical people.

– You can get quality training in a short time. Depending on which program you choose (Yellow Belt, Green Belt, or Black Belt), your training can be complete between 80 hours and six months. You are not rushed through your training, however. If you are aiming to complete your training with the 80 hour approach, you are welcome to spread those hours over an entire year.

– Six Sigma training uses skills you already possess to develop and strengthen other skills. You are not, for example, required to master calculus before or during your training. The emphasis of Six Sigma training revolves around computer work, not theory.

– The unique skills you already possess in the way you think and approach projects are emphasized in assigned work.

If you’re looking to improve your job prospects and develop new skills, contact us. We want to help you!
